H is for Hercule Poirot

H
is for Hercule!

For this year's A to Z I'm featuring books I've read based on the Reading Challenge.

Today's book is a book set during Christmas.

For this one, I'm going back to one of my favourite authors to reread (sometimes I even forget whodunit and am pleasantly surprised all over again!), Agatha Christie. There are two I can think of that relate to Christmas: the novel Hercule Poirot's Christmas and the short story collection Hercule Poirot and the Adventure of the Christmas Pudding.

I like this line from the Guardian review quoted in Wikipedia: "In this kind of detective novel, depending almost entirely for its interest on accuracy of logical deduction from recorded fact and yet with the drama played out by recognisable human beings, Mrs. Christie remains supreme."

Do you reread books?

What's your favourite not-necessarily-Christmas-but-set-at-that-time story?

I reread and re-reread... Which is actually self-defeating, if you think about it, since my greatest frustration is knowing I won't live long enough to read everything I want to. And no, I don't reread every single book, but the ones I've enjoyed (some I read long ago and came across again, some have been sitting on my bookshelf all along, conveniently)... Yes. I admit it. I reread them. And Agatha Christie certainly qualifies--among both categories. Great post!

Hi Deniz .. in last year's A- Z I mentioned Agatha Christie and her book "The Man in the Brown Suit" - one I hadn't read but tempted me because of the South African connection .. and so I zapped it out of the library and read it. Fascinating .. and then I found out she had made a Grand Tour: Letters and Photographs from the British Empire Expedition 1922 .. it was published in 2013 .. I bought a copy to read sometime!

The Guardian again comment on this book ..

I used to read a lot of murder mysteries as a young adult .. and I now enjoy seeing Poirot on tv .. an easier medium, when I can do other things as well as enjoy the story ..

I rarely re-read books .. reading one is a challenge .. though the TBR list is huge ..

Cheers Hilary
I've read Agatha Christie, but not that one.
I love to re-read books. If I don't re-read them within a year or two, I send them onto the second hand store or the library. My favorite Christmas book has to be The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, but I also like Emily Ann Benedict's Father Christmas Confessions series.

Yes, I do re-read. Some books I revisit over & over again.
I read and re-read and re-read and... And I love Agatha Christie. I read the Chrismas Pudding so long ago though... hmm, looks like time for a reread--Thanks!

And your post yesterday, Deniz... I loved the plans. It's interesting about the Canerik needing salt. My grandmother was a huge advocate of a tiny bit of salt being on her plate for bringing out the flavor of some of the blander melons. But I'd never heard of anyone else doing it before. Neat.
Although I haven't read it in some time, I lost track of how many times I read "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck.

I have a whole shelf of Agatha Christie paperbacks, plus 2 hardbound anthologies. She is a treasure. With the help of actor David Suchet and the excellent cast of that wonderful series, Hercule's Christmas will remain a favorite December entertainment here.

Thanks for coming by, everyone! Rereading is such a pleasure. Hilary, now I've got to add that Grand Tour book to my wishlist.
