Back from Vacation! IWSG, ROW80, and Read Holmfirth

Back from Vacation!

I had some ambitious ROW80 goals this time around:

  • Keep going on edits for The Handful of Time. I'm only on chapter 3!
  • Otherwise, I could work some more on edits for my short story, Blackbird's Song.
  • And finally get around to submitting Druid's Moon for an editorial review by Barbara Rogan.

I say ambitious, because I was busy drafting new scenes each day as part of the monthly exercise on thelitforum, in between work  and school and vacation and moving house -- we moved last week, and still have roughly 40 of 90 boxes to unpack.

Luckily, this month's exercise is on writing action scenes, and that's exactly the help I need to keep going on edits for The Handful of Time.

Today is Insecure Writer's Support Group Day!

This month's question: If you could pick one place in the world to sit and write your next story, where would it be and why?

Ooh, what a lovely thing to dream about. A Mediterranean beach, with a chaise longue on the sand and table with fruity cocktails? A garrett in the Highlands, with a roaring fire in the fireplace and a wild sea outside the windows?

Or... As we've just moved, I took the opportunity to create a writing nook for myself! A comfy armchair, a small bookcase, a lamp with mellow light, and only my current MS printed, and my laptop. No distractions! I can only hope... Will share a photo as soon as it's all settled.

The awesome co-hosts for the September 4 posting of the IWSG are

Books in the wild!

The new bookshop Read, in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, has been hosting a kind of books lost and found -- find a book in the wild, read it, and hide it for someone else to find!

We found I Miss You, Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt and Cyd Moore.

Also, Vicki Pettersson has recently started a Literary Haberdashery!
Our current read is The Taken, book 1 in the Celestial Blues Trilogy.

Griffin Shaw used to be a PI, but that was back when gumshoes hoofed the streets... and he was still alive. Fifty years later, he’s a celestial Centurion, assisting the recently, and violently, dead. Yet just because he’s an angel doesn’t mean he’s a saint. One small mistake has altered fate, and now he’s been dumped back onto to the mortal mudflat to collect another soul—Katherine “Kit” Craig, a journalist whose latest investigation is about to get her clipped.

Bucking heavenly orders, Grif refuses to let this sable-haired siren with hairpin curves come to harm. Besides, protecting her offers a chance to find the truth about his own mysterious death — and wreak some vengeance for the murder of his beloved wife, Evie.

Joining forces, Kit and Grif’s search for answers leads beyond the blinding lights of the Strip into the dark heart of an evil conspiracy. But a ruthless killer determined to destroy them isn’t Griffin’s biggest threat. His growing attraction to Kit could cost them both their lives, as well as the answer to the greatest mystery of his long afterlife …

Who killed Griffin Shaw?

Finally, Leah Mercer recently posted this lovely quote from George RR Martin about the sea:

It almost makes me long for another vacation...

Where did you take your last holiday?
Do you have any vacation book recommendations?

Looking forward to seeing the writing nook. The other destinations are beyond me, looking after an invalid husband, but I can dream and put those places in my books 😊
Hi Deniz - so glad you've been busy and accomplishing lots. Moving house too - that's way beyond the pale ... but good to know you've nabbed yourself a small writing nook - sounds fun ... I have a whole load of books here to read - will get to them - cheers Hilary

A writing nook...I love that. I've tried to create a reading nook for myself but ended up not even using it. But, then again, it was a tiny spot with a fold-able chair. If I could really make a comfy nook, I'd probably be there a lot. :)
Glad you have your own writing nook now!

Speaking of a place to write, and the sea, I'm recording here my discovery of the island of Tristan de Cunha. I found out about it in February 2019, and have been in love with the idea of the place since then. I would really like to visit it someday. Including the week at sea needed to get there!
