IWSG, ROW80, and New Releases

Books, books, and more books!

I've recently read a bunch of new books:

Still Life by Val McDermid

Today is Insecure Writer's Support Group Day!

This month's question is: When you think of the term working writer, what does that look like to you? What do you think it is supposed to look like? Do you see yourself as a working writer or aspiring or hobbyist, and if latter two, what does that look like?

Definitely a working writer! I think as long as you're writing all the time, reading, thinking of your stories, researching... You're a working writer! Never mind whether and where you've been published.

I think we're lucky in that nowadays there are so many places to share our writing with readers -- through blogs, in writing communities, through online or print magazines, and of course with printed and/or digital books.

As a reader, it kind of gives me pause, actually -- there are so many good books out there and so little time!

The awesome co-hosts for the October 7 posting of the IWSG are Jemima Pett, Beth Camp, Beverly Stowe McClure, and Gwen Gardner!

A new round of A Round of Words in 80 Days is upon us!

During the last round, I had a look at my revamped writing habits, and entered a few short story contests -- fingers crossed, still waiting for word on those!

Looking back, my goals were simple: "don't slack off! Edit something, anything."

Nice! Because I did it! I finished a full round of edits on paper for Captive of the Sea. And in September I participated in the Ask Me Anything writing exercise on thelitforum.com, which has helped me dig a little deeper into Mawdlen's character.

The easiest thing would be to keep the same goal for the final round. I'd llike to do another red pen of Captive of the Sea on paper.

And I'm still thinking of maybe putting out an anthology of short pieces...

Have you read any good new books lately?

Comments

I guess "working" depends on whether you define working as paid or not. Cause I'm certainly working, but I'm not getting paid very much.

Speaking of which, you asked about any new good books lately. I've heard that Psycho Hose Beast From Outer Space is okay...
You're right, there are a lot of opportunities for writer now.

I agree, 100%. Working does not necessarily mean getting paid. If you're spending all that time writing or thinking about writing, then you're a working writer. And it sounds like you're working pretty hard too.

Some of your listed books look interesting. I do the audio book thing because I spend so much time driving. Revival, by Stephen King was the latest really good book.

I like your definition of "working writer". Sounds like you are living the definition. Good for you.
Hi Deniz - you're always prolific and I suspect very disciplined in your writing ... as well as the job, and the kids - lots going on in your life. I've kept a note of these books you're recommending ... I've lots to read - sometime ... take care - and let me know if you're off to Zurich. Hilary

Thanks so much for your comments, everyone!
Aww, no Zurich, Hilary :-( Mini lockdowns are in effect across the country this month.
