Today's Blog Tour - Contests and Giveaways and Nathan on Indie

Nathan Bransford has an amazing post about indie publishing, followed up by today's post which showcases some of the better comments to the first one. All of the points he raises sway me toward indie publishing.

As if I hadn't already been swayed by the likes of Susan Bischoff and Kait Nolan. Kait's having a sale on Forsaken By Shadow to celebrate the book's one year anniversary on 25 March!

My only trouble is that I doubt I can make the time at the moment for marketing, book cover designing, and so on. Perhaps if I can wrangle part time work in the future, then I can consider it. But for now...

Are you a winner on Talli Roland's release party yet? Congratulations on the paperback release of The Hating Game, Talli!

Lynette Labelle - who's teaching the class Hook, Line and Sinker: How to hook readers and reel them in ("Do you know how to hook your readers? I mean, really hook them. Do you immediately think it’s all about the first paragraph? WRONG! Well…sort of.") in April - is hosting a contest in which you can win a critique of your first 500 words or query letter.

Melissa Bradley has a new book out - set in Istanbul! Just got my copy today.

Those are the blogs we have for you today. Now if you'll excuse me, snow clearing is happening on my street and I must go watch.

As for my own writing... I didn't even turn the computer on yesterday! Must have been repeat-lag from Monday night when, on a whim, I started doing a search of all the -ly words in my novel.

How many times do you use the word only?

Hey yesterday I searched my document for the word "only"; 62 times on the first 155 pages.

Stop by my blog, I have a styling award for you.

I will say that indie publishing is a lot of work. Traditional publishing is too, though. If you have the skills with MS Word and/or InDesign, and can hire someone to make your cover, you're already better off than a lot of people.

Also, please hire an editor, because it totally pays off. I wasn't sure if I should, but once I got Haunting Miss Trentwood back from my editor I praised her to the high heavens. Good luck! Contact me if you go indie and I'll see what I can do to help.

They were interesting posts.

It is a lot of work to self-publish but it depends on how keen you are on marketing. I don't promote much so I have a lot of time for other things . . . like writing. :D

It's definitely a lot of work starting off because there's so much to learn. No matter how well prepared you are, there are still mistakes you're going to make. But it's fun and surprisingly fulfilling to take control of all aspects of publishing.
The self-publishing/traditional publishing decision is a hard one for me... Every other day, one or the other sounds better to me. By the time my book is done, I am really hoping I'll have made a decision.

Oh, ugh, I've never searched for the word only. I bet I'd be scared.

Thanks for all the contest info!

Good links. Indi publishing is all the buzz these days. What an education we're all getting. Takes a lot of energy to go it on your own, not that you have to do any less if you're published with a small press.

Thanks Liz! Another snowstorm today...

Ooh, thanks Tanya!

Definitely true, Belinda. I've read a few non-edited e-books in the past month or so and... To be polite, I'll just say that I'm not sure why any author would put out work they don't feel is the best it could be.

I agree, Claire, which is why I think I could only go indie if I had a part time job. Otherwise, I'd rather make time for writing any day.

On the other hand... I agree with you too Madison! We'll see what happens when I finish the current book.

Thanks for dropping by Vicki, JL and Julie! In a way, I'm glad all this discussion is going on, so that we can learn from it - those who are going indie before everyone else are the brave ones!

Only is in my Wip 148 times! That's not too bad, is it? :)

You know, I'm still clinging to the dream that a big-wig publisher will pick up my book someday. But, my inner-writer keeps nagging me to check out the indies. I'll take a look. Thanks for the links!

Oh gosh, I'm the worst for the word 'only'!

Thank you for the shout-out!

I'm still holding out for the non indie/non self publishing route. We'll see how it goes as the years roll by. ;)

I'm with you Donea and Michelle - still trying my darndest to do it the traditional way. We shall see...
Happy to do it, Talli!
Thanks for coming by Nas :-)
