Annual Books Read Statistics for 2021 (now shortened!) and Photos!

H

ere is this year’s Annual Books Read Statistics and Thoughts Post!

Here are the statistics for 2020,
2019, 20182017201620152014201320122011 (and the list), 20102009 (and the list).

I’m doing things differently this year, because this post has started to become data-heavy, and not all the items from previous years need to be repeated each time. The two main changes are as follows:
Most recaps of items from previous years have been deleted
The following categories have been removed: Shortest Book, Longest Book, Fluff but Fun (comic books, etc.), Books From the 19th Century and Earlier, and Books from 1900 to 1960

This post will be up over the holidays as I take a little break and hopefully catch up on comments!

Books Read480, including the following:
135 novels and anthologies
133 MG and YA
63 board books
62 essays and non-fiction and comics
46 short stories, fairytales, plays, and sample chapters
41 poems

Having finished school last year, and having more time to myself to read as the kids grow older – and reading MG and YA along with my daughter! – means I’ve had more time to read novels, even while keeping up with my own writing!

2020: 81 novels, 37 MG and YA, 60 board books, 87 essays and non-fiction and comics, 30 short stories, plays, and sample chapters, 28 poems:
2019: 36 novels, 181 board books, MG, and YA (plus ongoing rereads), 31 essays and non-fiction and comics, 14 short stories and scripts and plays, 16 poems
2018: 66 novels, 133 board books (plus ongoing rereads), 27 essays and non-fiction and comics, 14 short stories and scripts and plays, 21 poems, 23 YA/MG books
2017: 49 novels, 45 board books, although the railway books by Rev. Awry and the Beatrix Potter collection total 49 books (which involve ongoing rereads, including the board books from last year), 27 essays and non-fiction and comics, 24 short stories and scripts, counting the stories read in anthologies as one since I didn’t read all the stories, 17 poems, 13 YA/MG books
2016: 168 novels and MG/YA and essays, etc., 45 board books and over 30 books in the Folio Society collected works of Beatrix Potter, 28 short stories, and 25 poems; Journal of Inklings Studies and Tolkien Society’s Amon Hen and Mallorn issues (counted as one)
2015: 91 novels and MG/YA and essays, etc., 29 board books, and 12 poems
2014: 111 novels and short stories (plus essay collections, comics, and poetry)
2013: 188 novels and short stories (plus poetry)
2012: 142
2011: 124
2010: 92
2009: 131
2008: 101
Note: Not counted every year: ongoing rereads of board books from previous years, monthly readings of Amon Hen and annual readings of Mallorn, school readings, and tens of thousands of words written and read for writers’ houseparties on thelitforum.com, plus other forum writings, magazines, newspapers, etc., as well as all j’apprendre lire Sami et Julie (weekly French reader books), ongoing rereads of board books from previous years including Roger Hargreaves and Christmas books, and Laudate saint of the day entries

Average over 52 Weeks480/52=9, or three books, two MG/YA, two board books, one essay, and a poem, roughly.

This isn’t entirely accurate. I read and reread about 10 or more board books a day! And about an essay and poem every week. Novels vary, depending on whether I’m binging on a reread or not! I also lump all the rereads of board books and count them as one entry, just for the record, but this doesn’t really reflect how often they get read. I also read quite a few sample chapters on Kindle and don’t keep track of them very well...

2020: 323/52=6.2, or three books, two board books, one essay, and a poem
2019: 278/50=5.6, or two books, two board books, one essay, and a poem
2018: 289/52=5.6, or two books, two board books, an essay, and a poem
2017: 175/50=3.5; two books, two board books, one poem
2016 (averages for this and earlier years are over 50 weeks, usually not counting poems): 4.8, or three books, four board books, and four short stories or essays
2015: 2.6, or two books and one short story and one board book
2014: 2.2, or two books and one short story
2013: 3.5, or three books and two short stories (one more than the previous couple of years)

Authors Read200, counting very many board books. This is an approximate number, as this category gets harder to count each year with all the various children’s books. I expected it to be lower than the past couple of years because I went through a major Agatha Christie and Babysitters Club reread this year, but it's quite high!

2020:
159, counting very many board books
2019: 180, counting very many board books
2018: 181, counting very many board books
2017: 100, give or take, counting many of the board books
2016: 130, but 103 without board books
2015: 91
2014: 61
2013: 88
2012: 105
2011: 89
2010: 63
2009: 57
2008: 69
Note: Not counted: Beta reads and anthologies

Most Books by One Author: Not counting authors appearing less than 6 times or various board books (I read 8 books by Mo Willems!), I read:
Judith Holofernes (various essays)
Amanda Palmer (various essays)
Agatha Christie (86 novels and short stories and plays! the only ones left to read are a few plays and the Complete Secret Notebooks by John Curran)
Ann M Martin (77! but some were ghostwritten)
Diana Gabaldon (27 novels and short stories!) (I really enjoyed these rereads, the first in a few years. Still remember how if it hadn’t been for my best friend and her mother, I never would have discovered the books.
It was odd to revisit Claire and Jamie when they were so young. And Diana Gabaldon was younger than I am now when she was writing it! Rereading felt like visiting a distant time and place; I can remember how fresh Claire's voice seemed on my first read, and how much I loved her tone, and the humour. At the same time, it's relaxing, because I don't have to worry about misunderstanding anything or fearing what may come. Really love the way it just keeps you reading, page after page, always eager to see what's next -- plus the fun of looking up words and classical references!)
Lois Lowry (16)
JRR Tolkien (7) plus related books (4)
Kait Nolan (8)
Beverly Cleary (7)

Oldest Book: Oldest works (not the actual copies but the stories and poems) were:
The Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlowe (poem)
The Flea by John Donne (poem)
The oldest original book was likely one of the Agatha Christies (100 years!)

Stories/Authors I Didn’t Like: This is the category under which I hide some honesty. Some of the books that I feel obligated to read (for review purposes or because I received them as gifts) leave me cold. I try not to be mean when doing a review post, especially when sharing a review on Amazon.
The Broken Shore by Peter Temple (leant by a friend; I just couldn’t connect with the writing style)
Summer Sisters by Judy Blume (I love Judy Blume. But this book was a bit too 1980s-scandalous-tell-all without making me care for the characters enough. I’m sorry!)

World's End by Paul Theroux (I’ve always wanted to read his travel writing and haven’t yet. This was fiction. What a slog! Pointless stories, annoying characters. I was NOT expecting that at all!)
Nancy Drew: The Secret of the Old Clock by "Carolyn Keene" (revised 1959 version not the 1930 original; my first ever Nancy Drew, and I was not impressed. First of all, I thought these were written by one author; I hadn’t known about the ghostwriting. Second of all, I hadn’t known about the 1950s rewriting; that’s just silly. Third of all, they’re so silly! It’s just a bunch of adventures in a row, no real character development. Nothing at all like Enid Blyton!
)

Books That Made Me Cry: In the last few years I’ve tried to remember to keep track of this throughout the year because it’s not very accurate at year-end when I can’t remember. The Lord of the Rings always makes me cry, but at different parts (this year it was Sam in Mordor. Often it’s when Bilbo stands up at the council of Elrond).
But I forgot again!
Here are the few I did note:
What World Is Left by Monique Polak
Voting Day by Clare O’Dea
Freckles by Cecilia Ahern

The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
The Little Match Gril by Hans Christian Andersen
Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (the scene at St Kilda! when Jamie comes to Fontainebleu (on first read, I thought they’d been separated for ages, but it was really only a month or two)! trout fishing in America! also, I laughed and laughed (again!) at “what news from the Underworld, Persephone?”)

Books/Authors I’d Recommend: Besides all the poems, all the Agatha Christie, all the Diana Gabaldon, all the children’s authors and comics and murder mysteries, here they are, without division into categories, and featuring a handful of children’s authors (quite a bit more than previous years!):

Voting Day by Clare O'Dea

The Actual Star by Monica Byrne

The Master Puppeteer by Katherine Paterson

The Sign of the Chrysanthemum by Katherine Paterson (reread)

Summer of the Swans by Betsy Byars

The Art of Asking Everything podcast by Amanda Palmer (I read all the transcripts!)

Bluestockings by Kate Davies (essays)

Ten Years in the Making by Kate Davies (nonfiction)

Slowly Falling by Rose Phillips

The Crown of Columbus by Louise Erdrich and Michael Dorris (reread)

Freckles by Cecilia Ahern

Coming Up for Air by George Orwell

Research Books: I didn’t do much research this year! I’ve only got History of London by Sir Walter Besant and the Usborne medieval clothing sticker book, it seems. I had lots of printouts of previous research on the 15th Century to use when revising Santiago and Mawdlen’s story. And my NaNo story is set a few years in the future; I’ll need to research certain aspects of genealogy and inheritance in Scotland and Switzerland when I get to editing.

The details of your reading lists are always impressive. I'll publish mine in early January, so far I think I'm at 52 books for 2021--I have tended to average about 4 a month for the last few years. Enjoy the festive season!
Hi Deniz - I really don't know how you do it!

I guess the sooner Emily can type the better - then she can keep her own lists, and perhaps help Mum with hers.

Excellent to record everything ... congratulations and good luck with your own books - cheers and enjoy the festive time ... Hilary

Thanks for wading through the list, Jeff and Hilary!
I'm trying to keep E's lists because I wish I had done it when I was a child -- so many books I only vaguely remember but that really made an impression on me when I was young!
