October 2 question - Ghost stories fit right in during this month. What's your favorite classic ghostly tale? Tell us about it and why it sends chills up your spine.

Ooh, mine are always tales in which there are elements that can't be controlled -- malicious ones that are after you.

One of the best is the creatures in The Enchanted Castle by E Nesbit.

A group of children with a magic ring create an audience for their play, made up of old coats and brooms and things. They call them the Ugly-Wuglies. The children wish the audience was alive, so that they could clap.

The Ugly Wuglies come to life and, yes, they clap, but they don't stop there.

The first question one of them asks is, "'an 'oo 'irect 'e 'o a 'ood 'otel?"

And it turns out they are mean. They attack an adult and wreak other havoc before the children manage to magic them away--all except one, who turns out to be a businessman in London. Only by the end of the novel is he dealt with, leaving behind a heap of clothes in his office.

The children keep wishing they could go back to a calm day of doing nothing but eating apples and reading books -- which sounds like heaven to me.

I first read this story decads ago, and the fear of creatures with ill-intent, that you can't reason with, has always stuck with me.

I even wrote a story featuring the Ugly-Wuglies!
