I Need an Intern Part 3, RIP, and the latest Harper Jackson
ook review day!
I've discovered another task for my intern -- apparently, I haven't collated all of my Rest in Peace posts.
I have three more notices I'd like to mention; in 2025, Jane Goodall, Monica Lewycka, and Mani of the Stone Roses passed away.
Over the weekend, I finished reading this!
On the Other Side by Harper Jackson

I built my life on my belief in justice. Until the day the system proved me wrong.
Now I’m back on Hatterwick Island with nothing left—no career, no credibility, and no illusions about the law I once trusted. The only thing heavier than the guilt I carry is knowing I once turned my back on a man who didn’t deserve it.
Rios Carrera.
Twelve years ago, my cousin disappeared, and he was the last one to see her alive. I believed the whispers that he was responsible. I made him the villain of the story—and he has every reason to hate me for it.
But when a graduate student vanishes and the police insist she left of her own accord, Rios is the only one willing to look deeper. What starts as a search for the truth drags us into something darker than either of us imagined.
Reluctant allies become something far more dangerous. Because the closer we get to uncovering what’s been buried on this island for decades, the more I realize justice isn’t black and white…and the man I once condemned may be the only one I can trust with my life—and my heart.
It's so fun when a book opens with a glimpse of a previous couple -- it's like getting a bonus epilogue!
I really liked the slow build up of Maddie and Rios' story, the way they had to become partners, then became friends, then more. The first kiss or even the first handhold in a story is always heartwarming and thrilling--in this book, we get a first hug! Delicious.
This is the penultimate book in a series, but can be read as a standalone, though it's great to see some characters' roles in certain events finally come to light.
The kind of book that'll keep you up all night, reading!
Back to my blog and intern lists! I've added a few items to each list:
For the blog:
- Change the template again, so that readers can see more than one post per page
- Update all the photos in old posts
- Update all the broken links in old posts (e.g. storify links)
- Compile all posts for the next blogiversary, the way I did during celebrations for my 500th post
- Related to the above, I'd like to keep track of all my book reviews (see intern list below)
- Keep up with the blog roll
- Re-sync with FB and tumblr and Ello and Pinterest and Mastodon
- Consider adding tags
- Prepare guest posts for Tolkienist, Tolkien Library, ROW80, etc.
- Compile all RIP posts
Things I need an intern for (a paid intern!):
- Type up all of the scraps and scribbles where I've written my dreams
- Type up and collate all my story ideas that are saved all over the place
- Copy all my book reviews from the blog to Amazon and Goodreads (and vice versa)
- Resync my YouTube and Spotify playlists
- Add the 1000+ books I've gotten since the last time the catalogue was finished, including all ARCs and other items in pdf saved in emails and on computer(s)
- Create an organised system for shelving all the written drafts of writing from the past decades
- Go through all the piles of "saved stuff" and emails, then make a comprehensive wishlist of all the books to get, including from the Folio Society
- Create a database to store every knitting pattern/recipe/good idea/remember to look up/quotes/poetry/etc. I've ever collected
- Collate all lists of places to visit and travel ideas, including those on Trello
- Insert commissioned art into my stories (and some other fanfiction-related tasks)
- Overhaul all saved lists of agents and small pblishers, etc. so I can submit to a few
- Send the backlog of saved photos to be printed in albums!
What kinds of tasks would you give to an intern?
