Insecure Writer's Support Group

A database resource site and support group for writers and authors. Featuring weekly guests and tips, a monthly blogfest gathering, a Facebook group, and thousands of links – all to benefit writers!

Website / Facebook / Twitter / Reedsy DiscountPast Issues / Fast Five Free Gift - Mobi / Epub / Pdf

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak. Those who have been through the fire can offer assistance and guidance. It’s a safe haven for insecure writers of all kinds!
Posting: The first Wednesday of every month is officially Insecure Writer’s Support Group day. Post your thoughts on your own blog. Talk about your doubts and the fears you have conquered. Discuss your struggles and triumphs. Offer a word of encouragement for others who are struggling. Visit others in the group and connect with your fellow writer - aim for a dozen new people each time - and return comments. This group is all about connecting!

Let’s rock the neurotic writing world!

The awesome co-hosts for the December 4 posting of the IWSG are Ronel, Deniz, Pat Garcia, Olga Godim, and Cathrina Constantine!

Every month, we announce a question that members can answer in their IWSG post. These questions may prompt you to share advice, insight, a personal experience or story. Include your answer to the question in your IWSG post or let it inspire your post if you are struggling with something to say.

Remember, the question is optional

December 4 question: Do you write cliffhangers at the end of your stories?

Are they a turn-off to you as a writer and/or a reader?

I don't! I love writing fun twists, if I can think of them, but I always feature a Happy Ever After ending, even if it's just a hint at a peaceful future...

I love the word swag! And we have IWSG swag!

All of us here are volunteers and the domain name costs money. The little extra from swag purchases goes to that domain. And it’s your chance to show the world you are insecure and proud!

Our Flag Means Death news!

Last weekend I attended a Starfury Conventions event -- the Republic of Pirates! A convention all about Our Flag Means Death. My first-ever convention and my first Starfury event!

I hope to share photos and titbits later on, but for now, I've got a playlist of all the songs mentioned in the panel sessions!

Recently, we celebrated the anniversary of this event, too -- the time a Whisky Trench Riders song was chosen to play on Hockey Night in Canada!

And I've got a new poem in the latest UN Mental Health and Well-Being collection! Sauti: Poems of Hope

No cliffhangers here, only hugs!

Do you write with cliffhangers?

What's a good poem you've recently read?

I like twists in a story, but read more non-fiction than fiction and in non-fiction, the twist are only appropriate if it's what happened. Erik Larson and Candace Milliard are good at finding those twists in writing non-fiction .
I really like plot twists too! Thanks for co-hosting.

Twists are good, as long as it wraps up and doesn’t leave a cliff hanger! Thanks for co-hosting today :)

I like plot twists too. I'm okay with cliffhangers in a fantasy or mystery. Thanks for co-hosting this month.

Hi,
I don't mind having Plot twist. In fact I find them interesting. I don't like Cliffhangers and don't buy a book that indicates it is a cliffhanger.
Have a Merry Christmas

Glad you enjoyed the convention. Thanks for mentioning our swag - and for co-hosting today!
Thank you for co-hosting, and for reminding me about the mugs. I'm ordering mine as soon as I get back to Canada.

Hi,
I returned to say thank you for co-hosting.

Good reminder of the Swag. I have no idea what 'Starfury' is so I will have to come back to find out!

I *love* a good plot twist! Jeffery Deaver is one of the best for smoothly executing the perfect twist. Even though I know he's going to have one, I'm still caught by surprise.

Thanks so much, all!

I don't know what a Starfury is so please don't let me hang and tell me it is in your next blog post. Please.

I didn't make it a cliffhanger on purpose! :-)
They host fan conventions in the UK, and this was the first time I'd ever been to one <3

"Starfury" - what a cool moniker for a convention (see what I did there: I used the word 'moniker' to seem British) Thanks for co-hosting. I hope that your holiday season is all you need it to be.

I've heard say that every ending is a new beginning, but I would add that some endings are definitely better than others when telling a story.

Thanks for co-hosting.

Thanks for co-hosting today. Cliffhangers don't appeal to me, especially if the entire story is a build-up to that climax.

Congratulations on being included in the poetry anthology. Well done!

Thanks for co-hosting today!
Plot twists are fine but cliffhangers depends on certain factors. Like the genre and waiting period between books. For romance books, cliffhanger and HFN (happy for now) endings are written off. Other genres like fantasy, mystery and thriller/suspense are more doable. Especially if all the book series is published. If still ongoing the wait time until the next book isn't too long. And if it's worth the wait.

I'm all for twists and turns and surprises but if there's no payoff that was promised, I won't read the author again. Thanks, for co-hosting!!
