Tolkien's Art in Tapestry Form

T

olkien!

I got to visit the Aubusson Tisse Tolkien exhibit in Paris last month!

The Aubusson weavers have created tapestries of some of Tolkien's art, and the exhibit came to Paris for a limited time, at the College des Bernardins.

I was pleasantly surprised to see other items included in the exhibit, such as Tolkien's Oxford gown!

Do you have another example of art begetting art?

Wonderful tapestries. The one with the purple mountain in snow looks like it was inspired by a famous (but I don't recall his name) Japanese woodblock artist,

Ooh, do you mean the artist of The Wave? I can see that1

Thank you, both! I was so glad to be able to visit this exhibit!
Hi Deniz - sorry it's taken me ages to get here ... but how amazing are those tapestries - just beautiful ... thanks for posting so many pics ... they really evoke his stories found within his books ... just gorgeous - lucky you to have made it to Paris to see them.

Also on looking I note the Aubussons started weaving in the 1300s, whereas the Gobelins (a family of dyers) - the French royal choice - only started in the middle of the 1400s ...

This a truly wonderful post - great education ... cheers Hilary
